The Heywood-Wakefield company was based in Gardner, Mass. Their modern furniture line was produced from the 1930s through the 1960s. This line was extremely popular because of its sleek, streamlined style and is very sought after by collectors and those who simply want well-made solid birch wood furniture. The furniture, mostly made in champagne or wheat finishes, has its own classic style, almost shaker-like in its simplicity and is appreciated for its timeless good looks.
The company itself has been producing furniture throughout the 19th & 20th century, from wicker furniture to institutional furniture such as school desks, as well as traditional early American styles and modern chrome tubular furniture made by the Lloyd manufacturing company. The shift in trends to the mid-century modern style has triggered a great demand for the streamlined style that is Heywood-Wakefield Modern.
